On 6 June 2025, Belgium officially launched its national Diversity Charter, reinforcing a European-wide commitment to workplace equality and inclusion. Held in Brussels, the event brought together public authorities, companies and civil society organisations who are committed to creating more inclusive work environments.

The Belgian Diversity Charter now joins over 25 national charters across the EU that form part of the EU Platform of Diversity Charters, a network supported by the European Commission to promote diversity and inclusion at national and local levels. These charters provide a structured yet flexible framework for organisations to assess, implement and strengthen their DEI policies.

Aarnout Lanckriet, Diversity and Inclusion Officer at the City of Ghent, attended the event and shared key highlights and reflections. His participation highlights the essential role of local authorities in embedding DEI not only in internal practices but also in wider city strategies.

“It was inspiring to witness the commitment of EU policy makers and local actors. Signing the Charter is a symbolic act, but what comes after the real, sustained effort for inclusion is what matters most” Aarnout noted.

For DiGiN, this launch reinforces the message we carry across Europe: municipalities are not just implementers of policy; they are changemakers. From using tools like the DEI assessment framework to sharing inspiring practices and launching intersectional campaigns, local governments can and should lead by example.
