Each June, Pride Month invites us to reflect on the progress made and the work still ahead in the pursuit of equality, dignity and freedom for LGBTIQ+ people. Across Europe, municipalities are at the forefront of this journey, transforming cities into safer, more inclusive spaces for all.

As part of DiGiN’s mission to support diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in local governance, we celebrate the public efforts, symbolic gestures and structural reforms that local authorities are taking this month and beyond.

💜 Visibility matters
From raising the rainbow flag over city halls to illuminating iconic landmarks in Pride colours, municipalities are sending a strong message: you belong here. In Ghent, Genoa, Rotterdam and beyond, public spaces are being reclaimed to reflect the diversity of their communities.

🗣️ Dialogue and education
Several cities are organising Pride Weeks and community events that go beyond celebration; they open up space for dialogue on mental health, anti-discrimination laws, trans rights and the role of education in dismantling bias. Municipalities are often co-hosting events with local LGBTIQ+ organisations, creating meaningful partnerships.

📣 Policy in action
Symbolism matters, but structural change is what ensures long-term inclusion. Cities such as Barcelona, Malmö and Berlin are updating local equality strategies, supporting LGBTIQ+ youth services, and improving access to inclusive healthcare. Others are integrating intersectionality into their DEI plans, ensuring that no one is left behind.

🛠️ Tools for transformation
The DiGiN project supports municipalities in taking their commitments further by providing assessment tools, practical resources and peer exchange opportunities. Whether your city is flying the flag, hosting a parade, updating policy or training staff, you’re part of a broader European movement toward justice and equality. This Pride Month, we honour the cities that stand up, speak out and act boldly for their LGBTIQ+ communities.

🏳️‍🌈 Let’s make every municipality a safe, inclusive home for all.
