The Municipality of Genoa is leveraging the DiGiN project to enhance its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategies, addressing the evolving demographic and societal challenges of the city. This initiative is a testament to Genoa’s commitment to creating a just and equitable workplace and by extension, a society that respects and embraces diversity.
The DiGiN project has catalyaed Genoa’s efforts to empower change agents, mobilise employees and strategise long-term DEI policies. By aligning the project’s goals with the city’s increasing diversity, Genoa is setting a robust framework to tackle issues of racism, discrimination and inequality head-on.
“Our goal is to transform our municipal operations to ensure DEI principles are not just ancillary elements but are at the core of our governance” states Yuri Piccione, from Genoa’s Human Resources and Corporate Security Management
One notable initiative inspired by the DiGiN project is the creation of the “Sportello dei neoassunti” a service designed to help new employees integrate into a respectful and inclusive work environment. This service is particularly focused on understanding and valuing the unique traits and backgrounds of newly hired staff, facilitating a smoother transition and fostering a supportive work culture.
In addition to onboarding new employees, Genoa’s Human Resources Department is conducting surveys across municipal departments to identify and address any instances of stress, discomfort or discrimination. These efforts are crucial for creating a work environment where all employees feel safe and valued.
“It’s about making our workplace as comfortable and equitable as possible, where every employee’s well-being is a priority” adds Piccione.
Through its proactive DEI initiatives and partnership with the DiGiN project, Genoa is making significant advances in fostering a municipal environment where diversity, equity and inclusion are deeply ingrained. The city’s approach serves as a promising example for other municipalities aiming to enhance their DEI practices.
